Lib woke to the feel of hot skin against hers, an arm draped loosely over the dip in her waist, and her eyes drifted open to find the room still dark. Twisting within Matt's embrace, Lib craned her neck to look at the clock on his nightstand. It was only a little after midnight; she hadn't been asleep for long.
Stretching, she tried to settle back against Matt's chest, but the unfamiliar feeling of sharing a tiny bed made her restless. She shifted until she was facing him, feeling the full extent of his nakedness against her own. Her first glance at his face was all it took to know she wouldn't be getting back to sleep.
For a while, Lib watched him in silence. His countenance was so relaxed, so young. So much like the Matt she'd fallen in love with in the first place.
Already, she could feel her heart squeezing down into a shape she knew entirely too well. Torn between wanting to press closer to both his body and to that hopeful, heartsick feeling, and a newer instinct to protect herself, she lifted her hand to touch his cheek. With his eyes still closed, he smiled and leaned into her hand.
She just didn't know if it was her touch he was dreaming of.
It was one of so many things she didn't know, and Lib felt a low pang at how quickly she'd asked him to take her to his bed. He was one of only a very small handful of men she'd slept with, and in the past, intimacy had always followed after weeks—if not months—of careful dancing and conversation. But then again, they'd had years. Years of friendship.
And years of silence.
The weight of all of her uncertainties pressed in on her. Suddenly the bed felt oppressively hot, the space cramped and stifling.
They needed to talk. And until they did, she needed to hold on to her heart.
Carefully, Lib slid out from underneath his arm, leaning forward just long enough to touch her lips to the corner of his mouth before climbing over him and onto the floor. In his sleep he hummed, then turned, moving into the space she had vacated as she'd pulled herself from his bed. After dressing in the dark, she looked back at him one last time, wanting nothing more than to curl back into him and to take what she could get. But she couldn't. Not yet.
Moving quietly, she bundled up and let herself out of the house. As she stepped back into the cold outside, she was relieved to find hers and Matt's to be the only cars there, grateful that she'd been the one to follow him, so she wasn't blocked in. Letting the car warm up, she brushed off the thin layer of snow that had fallen while they'd been inside, and cast one last look back at his bedroom window. It was dark, the curtains open, but she still couldn't see anything inside. Her gaze stayed on it as she backed the car out of the driveway and out onto the road, away.
